FACES on the Data: Putting Students at the Centre of Learning in Abbotsford
Across the Abbotsford School District, educators are working together to ensure every student is supported and moving forward in their learning. One of the ways schools are doing this is through FACES on the Data, a collaborative process that keeps real students, not just numbers, at the centre of decision-making.
Grounded in the research of Dr. Lyn Sharratt, the approach focuses on knowing learners well, being clear about learning goals, and using evidence thoughtfully to guide instruction. In the district, this work takes place through regular team meetings where educators look closely at student work, identify specific learning needs, and plan targeted next steps.
In participating schools, small teams of teachers, school leaders, and a helping teacher meet every few weeks to review student work. Together, they identify a small number of students who would benefit from extra support, agree on one focused instructional strategy, and set a clear goal for each learner. The team then returns to review progress and adjust the plan as needed.
“Instead of just looking at data, we sit down together and look closely at student work,” says Tracy, Director of Instruction, Curriculum. “It helps us understand what each learner needs and create a plan that supports their next steps.”
This work directly supports the district’s strategic direction which calls for clear learning goals, early and targeted support, and evidence-informed decision-making to strengthen student success. FACES on the Data brings these priorities into daily classroom practice by helping educators respond quickly and intentionally to student needs.
The process also reflects the district’s commitment to engaging opportunities and a progressive workforce. Teachers collaborate regularly, share strategies, and learn from one another, creating stronger professional practice across schools while ensuring resources are used where they have the greatest impact.
Nine schools are already participating, and more are asking to join. The growing interest reflects how this practical, collaborative approach is helping turn the district’s strategic priorities into meaningful action for students.
