Two Abbotsford School District Staff Receive ARJAA Awards

June 16, 2023

Christine Abbot, Principal of Colleen and Gordie Howe Middle and Julie Wilms, a teacher at Abbotsford Traditional School, were honoured with the Restorative Peaceful Schools Award at the May Annual General Meeting organized by the Abbotsford Restorative Justice and Advocacy Association. The event recognized Abbot and Wilms’ exceptional commitment to creating respectful and safe educational environments.

The Restorative Peaceful Schools Award is bestowed upon individuals who have a passion and commitment to creating a respectful and safe school community by supporting the implementation of restorative practices in the school system. Abbot is a Restorative Action Facilitator. She received the award based on her many years of promoting restorative practices in her school and using a restorative lens in her dealings with students. She has made numerous referrals to the restorative action program, allowing students to repair harm, restore relationships, and create healthier conflict-resolution skills. Wilms has been an advocate for the ARJAA program for many years and has shown her support and confidence in the restorative action process. She continues to refer students to restorative actions and is willing to learn more about restorative practice and how it can be used in schools. Abbot and Wilms have made remarkable contributions to creating peaceful learning environments that have impacted students and school staff. Their tireless work in nurturing a culture of respect and understanding has helped to cultivate a positive atmosphere that promotes personal growth and academic achievement.

“I have partnered with ARJAA for over ten years, and I've had numerous facilitators lead circles with students in my grade 6/7 classes,” said Julie Wilms, award recipient. “It's always been important to me that the ARJAA facilitator in our building feels part of my classroom and school community. I am grateful for our district's partnership with ARJAA, and I will continue to champion their excellent work in our schools!”

The Abbotsford Restorative Justice and Advocacy Association expressed their deep appreciation for the unwavering support that these two individuals have extended to their organization over the years. They were delighted to recognize their exceptional efforts and acknowledged the pivotal role they have played in their work. Korky Neufeld, Chair for the Abbotsford Board of Education and Kat Hannah, director of instruction, attended the AGM and heard how Abbot and Wilms have been a champion of their work for many years.

Christine Abbot and Julie Wilms' recognition with the Restorative Peaceful Schools Award is a testament to their passion and relentless pursuit of creating a safe and nurturing educational space. Their steadfast commitment to promoting peaceful practices and advocating for restorative justice makes them role models for educators and students alike.
